A World Seed is a unique string of numbers (or text) that determines how Minecraft generates its terrain, biomes, structures, and spawn points. Whether you found an incredible seed online with a village at spawn, want to replicate a single-player world, or use a seed from Chunkbase, setting a custom seed is easy.
This guide will walk you through configuring a custom world seed on your Cubes Hosting Minecraft server.
Step 1: Find or Copy Your World Seed
Before editing your server settings, make sure you have your desired seed ready:
- From Single-Player: Join your single-player world, open chat, and type
/seed. Click the seed in chat to copy it to your clipboard. - From Online Seed Lists: You can use seeds consisting of numbers (e.g.
184956772) or words/phrases (e.g.cubeshosting).
Step 2: Configure the Seed in Server.Properties
To apply a seed, you must add it to your server configuration file before the world is generated.
- Go to your Cubes Hosting Game Panel and Stop your server. (Crucial: Always stop your server before modifying world files or seed settings!)
- Open the File Manager and locate the
server.propertiesfile in your root directory. - Find the line starting with
level-seed=. By default, it will be empty:level-seed= - Enter your custom seed after the
=sign:level-seed=184956772 - Save the file.
Step 3: Regenerate Your Server World
Changing level-seed in server.properties will not retroactively alter chunks that have already been generated. To generate the new world with your seed, you must reset the current world folder.
You have two options in the File Manager:
- Option A (Fresh Start): Delete the existing
worldfolder (andworld_nether/world_the_endif using Paper/Spigot). - Option B (Keep Old World as Backup): In
server.properties, changelevel-name=worldtolevel-name=newworld. This forces the server to create a brand new world folder leaving the old one untouched.
Once done, Start your server. Minecraft will generate the entire world according to your custom seed!
Step 4: Verify Your Seed In-Game
- Connect to your server in-game as an Operator (OP).
- Open chat and type:
/seed - The server will output the seed currently loaded in memory. Verify that it matches the number you configured in
server.properties!
Important Tips & Gotchas
- Version Differences: Minecraft changed terrain generation significantly in version 1.18 (Caves & Cliffs). A seed from 1.16 or 1.17 will produce completely different terrain when loaded in 1.20+. Always make sure your seed matches your server's Minecraft version!
- Bedrock vs. Java Seeds: Modern versions of Minecraft (1.18+) feature parity for seeds between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. However, structure spawns (villages, temples) may still vary slightly between platforms.
Conclusion
Using a custom world seed lets you kick off your server adventure with epic mountains, instant access to rare structures, or a balanced spawn biome. Just set level-seed, clear or rename your world folder, restart, and dive in!
